Highland Grain - Case Study

How AgroLog improves crop management and monitoring

Discover how our intelligent bin monitoring system helped Highland Grain measure the temperature and moisture content of their stored grains in silos.

Our story with Highland Grain starts in 2018 when we first met Vicky King and heard about their needs.

Highland Grain is a specialized malted grain supplier, based in the North of Scotland. They supply malted barley from their cooperative members throughout their local area to the whiskey industry, handling about 14,000 tonnes yearly.

Vicky King, System and Project Manager at Highland Grain, explains that they have the AgroLog system installed in all of their 15 dry silos with malted barley, monitoring the grain temperature closely during both the drying season and long term storage. The AgroLog hardware is installed locally and while the sensor lines collect, the software analyzes and reports real-time data on the AgroLog IGMC Software.

Challenges

Before installing AgroLog monitoring systems, Vicky explains that they had no idea what was going on inside the silos. To properly manage both the drying process and long term storage, some solution was required. The long term storage silos needed monitoring to prevent mold growth and the drying process required monitoring to ensure the dryer will not be too high in temperature. Vicky was looking for a solution that would allow her to check on the barley on the go, at home, and outside of working hours.

Solution

Highland Grain installed AgroLog TMS6000 in 15 silos around their facility. The solution comes with both temperature and moisture monitoring, ensuring total control over the drying process and long term storage.

Now Vicky has the option to check on their silos whenever it is needed and from wherever she is, as the AgroLog monitoring system allows for remote monitoring through AgroLog IGMC Software, which collects and analyzes data. With the cloud-based software multiple people can check on the silos, giving the possibility to act immediately on alarms or irregularities and easing the monitoring process.

Results

By using the AgroLog TMS6000 solution, Highland Grain has been able to step up their grain management. They have less to worry about, as they can monitor their crops anytime, for anywhere – no need for numerous unnecessary on-site visits. The ease of use and reliability of the solution has freed up time in Vicky’s schedule, now she can focus on other tasks more diligently and trust that their crops are safe, checking up on them on the go.
